How Can You Become a Medical Assistant?
Medical Assistant (MA) is growing in demand and becoming a MA can be rewarding these days due to the forecast of shortages in MA. Let’s look at what are the requirements to become a MA.
Firstly, you should be someone who likes and enjoys helping people and of course not afraid of seeing blood. A good and successful MA should be kind hearted, patient, self discipline, calm, organise, well-groomed, polite, quick in making decisions even during emergencies, and willing to work for long hours if required.
Besides possessing the right characteristics a MA should have, you need to obtain a diploma or certificate through post secondary programs which will takes you a year to complete. An associate degree will take you two years to complete. Nowadays, these programs are available through on campus, online, or distance learning. However, you should always enrol in recognised programs offer by accredited colleges/universities which are preferred by majority of employers.
Throughout the MA program, you will learn subjects such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, laboratory methods, procedures in diagnosing, medicine and drug related principles, administration of medicine and basic first aid will be. Apart than that, administrative works such as typing and transcription, record keeping, accounting, insurance processing, communication with patients, health laws and ethics will also be taught. Hence it is advisable that you should get yourself familiar with these subjects and skills when you are in high school such as math, biology, typing, bookkeeping and computing.
You may require undergoing internship in order to complete your MA program depending on the programs you enroll. Internship provides opportunity for you to gain useful experience in healthcare industry. It is always encourage for MA students to participate in volunteer works to gain more hands on experience.
